Why 990IRS.com
Specialists in one thing: the Form 990
A Form 990 is not a tax return in the usual sense. It is a public document that donors, grantmakers, journalists and state regulators read. Getting it right means more than matching the numbers to your books.
- Accurate and complete. An incomplete 990 can be treated like a late one, so we answer every question that applies, not just the financial pages.
- On time, every time. We track your deadline and file Form 8868 before it passes if anything is still missing.
- Readable for the public. We help you tell your program story clearly in Part III and Schedule O, where donors look first.
- Straight answers. Fixed quotes, plain English and a real person who picks up the phone.

Penalties
Late-filing penalties
For returns due in 2026, $25 a day for most organizations and $130 a day for larger ones, and the same penalty applies to incomplete returns.
Form 990-N
Form 990-N (e-Postcard)
Eight pieces of information, filed online once a year. It takes minutes, and skipping it three years running costs an organization its exemption.
Public disclosure
Public disclosure rules
Your last three annual returns and your exemption application are open to anyone who asks. Donor names usually aren't, unless you're a private foundation.

Which Form 990 do you file?
The 990-N, 990-EZ, full 990 or 990-PF: the answer turns on your gross receipts, your total assets and whether you are a private foundation.
Lost exemption
Automatic revocation and reinstatement
Three missed annual returns in a row and the exemption is gone, automatically, with no appeal. Reinstatement is possible, and moving fast keeps more options open.
Deadlines
Due dates and extensions
Your return is due on the 15th day of the 5th month after your year ends. One Form 8868, filed by that date, buys an automatic six months.
Frequently asked questions
What is Form 990 and who has to file it?
Form 990 is the annual information return most tax-exempt organizations file with the IRS. It reports the organization's mission, programs, finances, governance and pay. Smaller organizations may file the shorter Form 990-EZ or the online Form 990-N instead, private foundations file Form 990-PF, and churches are generally not required to file. See which form you file.
When is our Form 990 due?
On the 15th day of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends: May 15 for a calendar-year organization. If that day falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Use our due date calculator.
Can we get more time?
Yes. Filing Form 8868 by the original due date gives an automatic six-month extension for Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF. There is no extension for the 990-N. We file extensions for clients as part of every engagement when the books aren't ready.
We missed a year (or three). Can you help?
Yes. We prepare late and prior-year returns, explain any penalty notice, and help request penalty relief where there is reasonable cause. If the IRS has already revoked your exemption for three years of non-filing, we help you through reinstatement. Call us first; the sooner, the better.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the form and how organized your books are. A 990-N is quick; a full Form 990 with several schedules takes real work. We give you a fixed quote after a short review of your last return and financial statements, before any work begins.
Do we need to send original documents?
No. We work from electronic copies of your financial statements, prior return and board information, shared through a secure method we agree on. Please don't email Social Security numbers or bank account numbers through the website form.
